At twenty-six, I discovered that my grandfather was a hero when I read his book about the Minsk ghetto, where he had founded a resistance network. Returning to Poland, after the war, he ended up emigrating to Israel: he died there. The passion of his life was communism.
My father also left Poland after the repression against the students in March 1968 and the wave of anti-Semitism. He became a leading figure in the democratic movement abroad. The passion of his life is his country.
I arrived in Israel as a correspondent for the newspaper Le Monde in 2014. I witnessed the identity tension of democracy, the increase in intolerance and the polarization of the public debate. At the time of leaving the country, I am writing this story which is a journey to the bottom of loyalty: what should we be loyal to?
This book crosses our trajectories, marked by the common erasure of our origins. In this time of identity assignment, we are bad Jews.
