The history of the València city's flag is a real puzzle which must be fitted with very different pieces (both written and graphic) which don't often seem to fit easily. The publication of Pere Maria Orts i Bosch's key study Història de la senyera al País Valencià in the final stages of the seventies had established that València traditional flag was that of the four royal bars and it was well into the 19th century when the blue increase with the embroidery, lately interpreted as a crown, was added. However, new sources (medieval and modern portolan charts and documents about the tailoring of municipal flags) has become known since then. They have been interpreted as a proof of the antiquity of the blue stripe crowned flag. This book, apart from contributing some new data, reevaluates all available information in order to try to establish which one was the flag the city of València used as its own from the Middle Ages to the begining of the nine hundred. |
